Life in The Hood

How do you feel about raising your child in The Projects. Me I feel the place where you live should have no bearings on what you become. Some of the issues I find challenging is trying to keep my son from picking the wrong type of friends. You see you have drug dealers who live right here and they advertise the benefits of selling drugs. Oh they drive nice cars they wear the latest fashions and have money that they flash. Wow what an impression for a young boy who probably has to wonder where his next meal is coming from or when he ask mom or dad for a pair of sneakers and he or she says they can't afford it. When my son ask why is charlie on the corner everyday I say charlie had a choice and he chose to stand on the corner everyday. That's not a choice that you would want to do. You want to finish school and be somebody.

My Surroundings

Good morning to all the single mom's,dad's and the lucky and fortunate two parent home. As we begin our work week taking our children to school or the babysitter I assess my surroundings and I wonder what are some of the benefits of living in housing and I can honestly say that the rent is cheap,I don't pay gas and light and transportation is very close. The disadvantages are that people don't respect where they live and throw garbage all over the place. We must talk and teach our children and yes adults in our neighborhoods to respect their environment and where they live. We can make the projects a better place if we learn to keep it clean and pick up after one another.

The Projects

Hello everyone,
My name is Leslie Johnson. I am a single mom who resides in the Bronx. I live in a housing project called Mckinley Houses. I've been here for alittle over 9yrs. I am a receptionist in a nursing home. I have 3 children Janelle 23,Cody 17, Leeann 15. I often wondered if there are other mother's like me who are low but middle class and are rasing children like myself in the projects. The everyday struggle to protect your children from drug dealers, prositutes and crack heads. To show our children that their is a world out there other than what they see in their environment. I'm hoping that their are other parents who can relate to my struggle. I will be writing about life in The Projects so stay tune...
